Today we journey just outside Lisbon to the enchanting town of Sintra, a place so magical it feels pulled from the pages of a fairy tale. Once a summer retreat for Portuguese royalty and nobility, Sintra is nestled in lush, forested hills and is filled with romantic palaces, mysterious gardens, and centuries of rich history.
Our day begins with a visit to the Palácio Nacional da Pena (Pena Palace)—a colorful and whimsical 19th-century palace perched high above the town. With its vivid facades, eclectic architecture, and sweeping views over the Sintra mountains, it's no wonder Pena is one of Portugal’s most beloved landmarks.
We'll also explore the historic town center, where cobbled streets wind past charming shops and local cafés. There will be time to admire the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, recognizable by its twin chimneys and rich blend of Moorish and Manueline styles.
Throughout the day, you’ll learn about Sintra’s role in Portuguese history and why this UNESCO World Heritage site has inspired poets, artists, and royals for centuries.
In the late afternoon, we’ll return to Lisbon with hearts (and cameras) full of wonder.
